Reflection Alone

Reflection Alone

Over the long fall weekend, I went on a three day camping trip in Acadia. I lost cell service about an hour into our ride up on Friday morning, and I did not get it back until our ride home on Sunday night. During this time I was unable to use my phone to connect to others even if I wanted to. Leading up to the trip, I was spending a lot of my days dealing with overwhelming drama from friends back at home. It got to the point where I couldn’t focus on school work anymore because I was so overwhelmed with everything involved. The camping trip forced me to take a break from it all, which had a very positive impact on me. During those days I was able to really connect with myself and my own opinions. I was able to assess the situation that was happening and form my own viewpoint without the influence of what my friends had to say. I think that sometimes we get so caught up in technology and social media because we become concerned with things that shouldn’t really concern us. It all becomes too much at points, but not many people have the strength to just unplug on their own. I am guilty of this, for the only reason I unplugged was because I actually couldn’t reach out to anyone during those three days. Unplugging, whether it be for hours or days, allows us to connect with our true selves. Being alone is a powerful thing because we can really discover our true thought and feelings without the influence of others. Many people, including myself, need to remember this importance of unplugging, and to get better at doing it when necessary.
